- Live In Care -

- In Depth Loving Care -

Live-in care involves a person or a couple of people living with you in your home whose role it is to take care of you. A live-in carer resides in your home and looks after you and your needs 24-hours a day, seven days a week. This means you have someone with you at all times. but someone who also respects that it is your home and does not interfere or overwhelm you with their presence. Most times you will have up to three regulars carers working with you on a rotational basis. Don't worry, this means that you will have one person at a time living with you, not three carers living with you at the once! Generally the carers will rotate on a week on, week off basis. 24-hour live-in care is most appropriate for individuals with moderate to mildly severe care needs who have some mobility need or who simply require some personal care. Live-in home care is also perfect for people who live alone – as often carers provide much needed companionship too. The carer can also run errands and take you out to do shopping, have your hair done or attend doctors' appointments for example.

Multiple Sclerosis

Over 100,000 people in the UK have Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a condition that affects the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. The damage that is done to the nerves during MS is due to the immune system mistakenly attacking nerve coatings. This leads to symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, balance and coordination issues, numbness/tingling, pain, problems with vision and cognition. Although MS is not fatal, it is an unpredictable, lifelong condition that affects a person in a number of ways both physically and emotionally. Further, it affects each person differently and the effects experienced may change over time.

Brain Injury

Brain injuries affect people in many different ways. While some injuries are short-lived, others can change a person’s personality or cognitive abilities permanently, which can make independent living a real challenge. Many people recover quickly and go on to live a full life once again – but unfortunately some will suffer chronic mental health problems following serious trauma, which may mean they require day-to-day care from an experienced professional. A live-in carer from Hippo care limited will provide that one to one care for as long as it is necessary, and will support their client in adapting to changes in daily life.

Motor Neurone Disease

Motor Neurone Disease is a rare and devastating condition which leads to degeneration of the spine and musculatory system, weakening muscles as it progresses (muscular dystrophy) and having a significant affect on a person’s motor skills. The effect of muscle weakness can affect the way a person walks, moves, grips objects, talks, eats, drinks and breathes. It can also affect cognitive ability, thought processes and emotional wellbeing. The disease is most common amongst the 40-70 year old age group and early signs can include general fatigue, slurred speech, jerking of the limbs and/or tripping and difficulty in swallowing.

Live-in Care for those with Dementia

With Dementia care in your own home, you or a loved one will be free to welcome visitors and be free to continue with your own routine: living as independently as possible; the only difference is that you will be supported around the clock by an experienced, professionally trained visiting or live-in Dementia carer. Carers are trained to be there as part of the family to whatever degree is required or wanted, but never to intrude or dominate the home life of our client, only to enhance and support their quality of life. Caring for a person with Dementia can be extremely demanding (as well as rewarding of course) and a large part of our job is to reassure families and loved ones that there should be no guilt placed on them for asking for help. We will support the families, allowing them to get on with their own lives, confident in the knowledge that their loved one is in the best possible hands.

The term ‘learning disabilities’ refers to a wide spectrum of issues, but generally, a person with this type of disability will have cognitive ability that is much lower than average. From an inability to cook, to not being able to manage paperwork and bills at home, the problems associated with learning disorders are as wide and varied as the personalities of those who suffer. This can make it difficult for them to fully integrate into society and they may have trouble looking after themselves. If it’s becoming clear that your friend or family member is struggling to get by on their own, we would recommend contacting an agency that provides live in care for learning disabilities. Cancer

Cancer For the person who is diagnosed with cancer, there is the worry about their own health and mortality. It can be just as difficult for them to talk about their illness as it is for family, loved ones or friends to engage in conversations. No matter how close the relationship, there is still the worry of saying the ‘right thing’ and not appearing terse or uncaring. It can be difficult to cope with the uncertainty of the illness and the treatments. This can result in fluctuating emotions that bounce between good days and days that are not so good. Mood swings from anger to sadness to fear can be regularly experienced, especially during cancer treatments. Live-in carers are often hugely valuable not only to the person with cancer, but also to their loved ones; offering practical and emotional support. Types of Live-in Care

Carers' Breaks

Sadly, there is often a lot of guilt associated with the idea that by asking for help, or by simply needing a break, the person caring for a loved one, is somehow failing. This could not be further from the truth, as anyone who has been a carer will testify to. Caring for someone less able than yourself for whatever reason, is incredibly hard work. It is extremely rewarding, but also challenging and at times, is downright exhausting; everyone needs a break sometime! Often times, it is the carer's reluctance to "let down" their loved one which leads to emergency care being needed; they may have gone so long without a break that they make themselves ill! Policy makers in the UK agree with this sentiment and carers are able to request that an assessment be carried out by their local social services department. Following this assessment, the carer may be eligible to have temporary live-in care from a company such as Hippo care limited paid for. Carers' breaks are so the carer can look after their own health and wellbeing. In you would like to know more about carers' breaks, contact us and your local social services department to arrange an assessment.
